A Rare Pair of Parcel Gilt Mahogany Chippendale Rococo Looking Glasses, c. 1760/1780
These gilt mirrors make a sensational statement with elaborate carving on a mellow, well-aged mahogany substrate. Pairs are extremely rare, and these are of exceptionally large size, retaining their original wavy aged glass. There are no breaks or major alterations; the both retain original backboards, etc. The Rococo theme here has the character of work done early in the Chippendale period, and the overall feeling is one of a very Rococo early style of this opulent mirror form. These are the best of the best.sw01524 - $150,000

A Cherry Tilt-top Table with Dishtop and Bird Cage in Old Surface, Connecticut, c.1780
This table retains an old, dry, crusty, dark surface throughout. The top is composed of three boards, also sometimes seen in Newport tables, is understandable as cherry, like walnut, is not typically found in wide lengths. Interestingly, the cleat supports are fully mortised into the top with no screws and probably eplains why the top has stood the test of time. Also, the top is a dishtop which was more costly to produce, as the entire top had to be turned with no margin for error. The birdcage, further is crafted with turned supports, and interstingly, the cleats are notched to taper at its ends, again a trait often seen in Newport tables. Ergo this country table perhaps has a coastal Connecticut origin. sw00007 - $6,500

A Rare Walnut Inlaid Renaissance Revival Center Table with Dramatic Wolf Heads, c.1870
This monumental center table is grand in scale and is elaborately inlaid both on its top and fully around its apron. What sets this table apart from all others we have seen are the fabulous Wolf heads. The oxidation is magnificent on these, as it is on the rest of the piece, as craquelature is still evident under a fine French polishing. This table is the best in its category, retaining its original urn between stretchers, et al. The inlay is in absolutely perfect condition, and the quality of the work is clearly visible throughout. This table is ebonized and gilt incised throughout including an elaborate urn finial. sw00554 - $45,000

A Small Scale Chippendale Mahogany Camelback Sofa, England, c.1780
This is a small-scale sofa (68 in. wide) supported on 4 molded legs, giving it a very stable appearance. The lines are classic. See the attached images of when Levy had it up holstered, and other related examples, including J. Walton. It is a gem, and for its size, quite scarce. Ginsberg and Levy were top New York dealers, firm continued by the Levys. sw01284 -

A Fine Mahogany Serpentine Hepplewhite Sideboard of Small Proportions with Superb Inlays, Southern, c.1790-1800
This sideboard has a diminutive feel with a gentle and desirable serpentine front. It has been French polished, and reveals a warm mahogany color. While the general presentation of the piece is understated, the four sets of inlay are truly exceptional. The inlay on each of the legs is boldly modeled, and is striking for its somewhat provincial and/or naive petals with the traditional patera inlays. Cabinetmakers often acquired these inlays and many come right from England, however the leafage inlays shown here between paterae show the handwork of the cabinetmaker...sw01539 - $14,000

An Outstanding Mahogany Sheraton Carved Card Table with Mounts, Salem, 1810-1815, attributed to Samuel Field McIntire
TThis is an outstanding Sheraton card table in pristine condition with original mounts. This model is extremely successful and desirable because of the gracious serpentine swing to the front apron, and the superbly executed columns that are fully carved. Here, there is not just one set of columns flanking the canted corners, but a double set with leafage carving just above the reeded leg. The color is a beautiful amber which only time creates. A Chippendale Mahogany Secretary/Bureau, England, c.1780
This is a wonderfully constructed secretary/bureau, all composed of mahogany solids, and it is very heavy. Each solid drawerfront exhibits the striking mahogany veining that this wood is famous for. Note the carved dental work of the cornice molding. The feet as well, are all original and have a gadrooning over the knee. What's extremely remarkable about this form is its functionality, with the large writing surface developed when two of the drawers are combined. A Large Monumental Classical Gilt Gesso Convex Girandole Mirror of with Carved Eagle, Flora, and Candleholders, English/American, c. 1810
This striking Girandole is completely original with a strikingly well-carved dynamic eagle holding a chain, all of which is supported by deeply carved acanthus centering a dish with Classical lion's head. Girandoles are the most desirable and engaging of the mirror forms, in our opinion. This mirror is completely original, with new gold leaf over much of the original, with its surface antiquity quite visual.

A Monumental Louis XIII Rococo Mahogany Musical 9-tube Tall Case Clock retailed by Bawo & Dotter, c.1900
This is a monumental 9-tube clock composed of the best solid figured mahogany with wonderful carving to match throughout. The heaviness of this piece is offset with the acanthus carved French feet of delicate proportions. While this clock is signed on its face by the retailer, Bawo & Dotter / New York, there is more to the story of this company. It appears they were a company somewhat like Tiffany that had a major building in New York named after them. They retailed a number of luxury goods, denoted by a varying grade nomenclature. A Magnificent Sheraton Carved Mahogany Dressing Bureau with Brass Inlay, Salem, Massachusetts, McIntyre school, c.1810
This dressing table is the finest Salem dressing table we have ever seen, and easily matches up to the best of the BostonSeymour school. Note the mirror brackets--which are twice as large as those found on the Boston example--and the magnificent acanthus carving and rosettes carved out of the same solid block as the bracket itself, not merely carved afterward and applied. If this weren't enough, the carved broken arch pediment above the mirror and central panel with reeded frame complete the tour de force. The actual case is equally impressive. A Pair of Wall Mounted Victorian Renaissance Revival Demi Lune Egyptian Marble Top Tables on Walnut Base, c. 1860
Pairs of period marble top demi Lune side tables are extremely rare, and these have a magnificent marble aspect. Note the somewhat greenish cast with white veins flowing as if in motion, capturing the molten silica that was beginning to cool down. We used to call this “bank marble”. type which is very rare. Note that small portions of some of
the brass are missing, but it is part of its history we prefer

small overhang, given its 38 in. case size, so as not to make
its scale unduly large. sw01232 -

Phyfe style Classical Lyre Chairs, 1920s, ex Burden Family via
Schuyler G. Chapin

patrician New Yorker and white-shoe impresario who glided through
society and a string of jobs in the arts-including general manager
of the Metropolitan Opera, cultural affairs commissioner of
New York City, and dean of the school of arts at Columbia University".

A
Classical Mahogany Server with Liquor Storage Compartments,
New York, c.1815, Phyfe Workshop or Contemporary of Equal Rank
This server is in magnificent condition throughout.
It has been beautifully French polished and shows a most beautiful
mahogany wood figure and color. It's the type of server that
belongs in a large Southern home, and no doubt, because of its
fabulous condition, resided in such a home. It was probably
made for one of the grand townhouses in New York, being built
at the time
it's that type of piece. The original cut glass
pulls are magnificent, as are original brass side rails. See

A
Cherry / Bird's Eye Maple Washstand with Scroll Supports, New
England, c.1830
This washstand has an original surface and period pulls
with contrasting bird's eye maple drawerfronts. Although a somewhat
simple form, this stand is far from simple. The scroll supports-not
ordinarily seen in this type of piece-are beautifully crafted,
and speak to the Pillar & Scroll / Restoration style popular
at the time. The more common examples simply have turned front
supports, matching the rear supports used here. The apron on
the top has its sides dovetailed into the back (see detail).
And, the fact that this is done in a canted fashion shows the
cabinetmaker's skill and enterprise. It's one of the best of
its type. sw01513 - $5,200

Carved Mahogany Drop Leaf Sewing Table, Boston, attributed to
the Seymour Shop, c.1815
This classical work table is fully developed with mounts
and full complement of drawers, which includes its original

made in Boston by a number of shops, we attribute it to the
Seymour shop on the basis of the drawer blockings, which, in
the Seymour style are placed close together, as described by
Thomas Mussey in The Furniture Masterworks of John & Thomas
Seymour. Note the close-up with the ebony inlay and gilt mounts.

It makes a very Chippendale presence with the stylized arched

this chest was deaccessioned from the New Jersey Historical

Mahogany Regency Lyre Tall Case Clock with Block and Shell,
England, attributed to David Greig, Perth, 1810-1831
This clock encompasses one of the most dramatic design
changes in the English / American clock repertoire. Not only
is there dramatic lyre form, almost like a cello, but a magnificently
figured block with exuberant shell above. As the midsection
is recessed from the base, this clock exhibits a very slender
stylized form. We feel this is an important clock, as the interpretation

and are fully embellished with carved knees, backsplat, etc..

when it points to New York work from shops such as Hagen or
Sypher. Several works by these makers can be found on our
site. The claw and ball legs are absolutely superb and done
as well as period examples. The table rotates on a brass plate
with roller bearings, all of which are nicely machined for
long life. The wood is all solid mahogany and the shelf supports
are tightly turned with shelves smartly reeded, as is the
circular top. Note the quality of the figured mahogany chosen
for the top.

An Inlaid
Mahogany Hepplewhite Sideboard with Bellflower and Urn Inlays,
New York, c.1795-1803
This is an exceptional sideboard in pristine condition.
It is fully developed with bottle drawers flanked by convex
side drawers, all surrounding small inlaid doors. This model
relates very closely to a sideboard handled by Wayne Pratt,
Inc. of Woodbury, CT, a furniture dealer known for dealing at
the highest levels. The example we show is further embellished
with urn inlays which are very rarely found in sideboards as
usually bellflowers are about as far as it gets, line inlay
notwithstanding. Also, note the oval inlays above the legs.
They are very subtle and reminiscent of another somewhat similar
sideboard, handled by C.L. Prickett, another highly regarded
dealer. sw01464 - $28,000
