A Pair of Brass and Marble-Mounted Carved Mahogany Open Armchairs, South China, 2nd half of the 19th century
Chinese chairs of this period are available; however, those of the quality we show are quite scarce. Note, these chairs retain their original finish, something which is very important to us antiquarians. Pairs are rare, and those with original marble insets even more so. Interestingly, we have never seen brass onlay, which makes a lot of sense on the foot rail. Moreover, the design of the open woodwork in the back and arms is exceptional and highly artistic. These chairs were highly prized, and came out of an estate sale from their original owners. We are pleased to offer them.

A Mahogany Sheraton Upholstered Armchair, New England, c.1820
This is a provincial example of the lolling chair form and is delicately executed throughout. Note the baluster shaped front legs and the stylized arm supports which lend a feeling of good support to the arms which terminate with small scrolls. The back is beautifully curved, which again terminates in a scroll similar to the arm. What makes this chair special--aside from form and simplicity--is the first surface. It has never been refinished and only lightly waxed through the years. sw00299 - $6,500

A Pair of Large Mahogany Classical Card Tables, Philadelphia, 1830
These card tables are of large scale and were deaccessioned from the University of Pennsylvania, where they were used in the Van Pelt Library. They are quite heavy and substantial with solid mahogany tops. The table supports are stylized fleur-de-lis in form (see detail, it is beautifully developed), and as a center pedestal table, this size is greatly diminished given the scale. Whereas most card tables are in the 36 in. range, these are 44in. sw01451 - $14,000

A Carved Mahogany Chippendale Card Table, with Serpentine Apron, England, c.1780
This is one of the finest English card tables we have handled. The top leaves are beautifully figured mahogany, the edges of which are superbly carved. American models of this type were copied in Newport, and those carved edges never come close to the degree of craftsmanship shown here. Carving on edges is extremely difficult, and the work here is clearly by a master. The apron is serpentine and undulates on two planes, from the front, and from the bottom. sw01346 - $18,000
