A Pair
of Brass and Marble-Mounted Carved Mahogany Open Armchairs,
South China, 2nd half of the 19th century
Chinese chairs of this period are available; however,
those of the quality we show are quite scarce. Note, these chairs
retain their original finish, something which is very important
to us antiquarians. Pairs are rare, and those with original
marble insets even more so. Interestingly, we have never seen
brass onlay, which makes a lot of sense on the foot rail. Moreover,
the design of the open woodwork in the back and arms is exceptional
and highly artistic. These chairs were highly prized, and came
out of an estate sale from their original owners. We are pleased
to offer them.

A Mahogany
Sheraton Upholstered Armchair, New England, c.1820
This is a provincial example of the lolling chair form and is
delicately executed throughout. Note the baluster shaped front
legs and the stylized arm supports which lend a feeling of good
support to the arms which terminate with small scrolls. The
back is beautifully curved, which again terminates in a scroll
similar to the arm. What makes this chair special--aside from
form and simplicity--is the first surface. It has never been
refinished and only lightly waxed through the years. sw00299

A Pair
of Large Mahogany Classical Card Tables, Philadelphia, 1830
These card tables are of large scale and were deaccessioned
from the University of Pennsylvania, where they were used in
the Van Pelt Library. They are quite heavy and substantial with
solid mahogany tops. The table supports are stylized fleur-de-lis
in form (see detail, it is beautifully developed), and as a
center pedestal table, this size is greatly diminished given
the scale. Whereas most card tables are in the 36 in. range,
these are 44in. sw01451 - $14,000

A Carved
Mahogany Chippendale Card Table, with Serpentine Apron, England,
c.1780
This is one of the finest English card tables we have
handled. The top leaves are beautifully figured mahogany, the
edges of which are superbly carved. American models of this
type were copied in Newport, and those carved edges never come
close to the degree of craftsmanship shown here. Carving on
edges is extremely difficult, and the work here is clearly by
a master. The apron is serpentine and undulates on two planes,
from the front, and from the bottom. sw01346

York Hepplewhite mirror form of the early 19th century. It incorporates
the urn with flowers above swan neck pediments terminating in
carved rosettes. This is the full blown model with an inlaid
shell and an eglomise reverse painting. These models additionally

A Large
Gilt Federal / Classical Giltwood Mirror with Eglomise Panel
of Mt. Vernon, c.1820
This is an impressive mirror
and is as developed as the form evolved over the short 1800-1820
period. The gilding, which has been conserved is truly outstanding,
and with the reverse painting of Mt. Vernon, makes an important
statement. This is surely a showpiece mirror, and while the
reverse painting is not first, it is done by a superb artist-as
good or probably better than its original. The double columns
are beautifully worked with an interesting change in the columns
that flank the painting. sw01440

An Edwardian
Satinwood Shieldback Painted Open Armchair, England, late 19th
Century ex. Pebble Hill Plantation
This magnificent chair came to
us from a collection assembled by The Pebble Beach Plantation.
There are a number of pieces on our site from this collection,
which you should additionally view. Satinwood has always
been a most desirable wood, and used on some of the finest pieces
of English 19th century Hepplewhite furniture. Additionally,
the painting on this furniture style is truly exquisite, and
as many point out, it's unfortunate that these painters did
not sign their work, because the craftsmanship is spectacular.

Pietra Dura Bird and Floral Marble, probably Japanese on a Victorian
Rococo carved Gilt Wood Stand, late 19th century
This is an exquisite stand of
hand water-leafed gold leaf that is matched to a magnificent
Japanese stone mosaic of bird and flowers. The style of the
scene emphasizes simplicity, and with the wonderful matching
of the stones, this piece typifies its style of craftsmanship,
especially as practiced during the Great Revival in the late
19th century. The stand is obviously Rococo, with French scrolls
and a plethora of carved elements. Of its type, it's a good

A Mahogany
Porringer Tea Table, Queen Anne, Newport, c.1735-1750
This model of mahogany table
with the porringer top is probably the most sought after of
tea tables, particularly among those made in Newport. It can
also be referred to as more of a tavern table because of its
less formal aspect. Note, the typically Rhode Island straight
leg, which is also very common in English furniture of that
time. In fact, a number of Newport pieces are the closest along
with Philadelphia pieces to the English style tradition. It
is highly desired and is the rarest. sw01042

A Tiger
Maple Daybed, New England, c.1830
Originally, this was a much wider bed, a sleigh bed that was
shrunken down to day bed size for use as a commodious sofa and/or
day bed. The four supporting side members are all solid tiger
mahogany of the finest color. The rails holding the two sides
of the bed are tiger maple and later, evidenced by its lighter
color. The panels within each end are bird's eye maple. This
daybed is a tour de force of the finest solid tiger maple and
weighs a ton. Rarely if ever does one find Tiger Maple of this
category. Please view all the images; it's a true rarity. sw01432

A Tiger
Maple Chest, Rhode Island, c.1770
This tiger maple chest has magnificent tiger on the drawer fronts.
It doesn't come any better. The feet are quintessentially Newport.
They have the famous ogee form on a slight platform. The piece
is in a perfect state of preservation. The brasses are appropriate
replacements. While many of these bureaus have simple bracket
feet and make it hard to determine much about origin, this chest
has feet that are not often seen and clearly point to the Newport/Rhode
Island location of manufacture. sw01431

A Walnut
Lowboy, with Slipper Feet, Newport, c.1760
This lowboy has beautiful yellow brown
patina which has aged beautifully through the years. The feet
are the highly desirable slipper foot form and have a desirable
sway to them that has a characteristic animation. The feet are
darker, which is typical, because of the type of walnut being
used here. The brasses are not original, but are of the period.
The top also has crimped corners, also a desirable feature.

Cherry Slant-top Desk w/ Stop-fluting, New London County, Connecticut,

turned toward the brown family, which is the result of many
years of oxidization. The brasses are original. This desk has
the remarkable feature of stop-fluting at the ends flanking
the drawers, which is rarely seen. A chest which is illustrated
in New London County Furniture: 1640-1840, Lyman Allen

A Classical
Mahogany Settee, Providence, RI, Rawson Shop, c.1825
It is rare to find a small Classical sofa or settee, which amazingly
retains its early fabric. We have French polished the legs and
added some gold leaf to where there was originally gold leaf
in various parts of the legs. This is a very engaging little
settee because it very delicately mirrors the classical form
with unusually curved and sophisticated arms and has those amazing
parcel gilt eagle feet that are very distinctive to the work
coming out of the Rawson shop. sw01367

A Highly
Carved Classical Mahogany Sofa, Phyfe workshop, c.1825
Classical examples of Phyfe's sofas come to market from time
to time in varying states of condition. This example is the
only one we have found with complete carving from one end of
the crest rail to another. The carving is all of acorns and
is superbly done. Note the crest rail leans back, which usually
is the Phyfe tipoff. In our example, the feet are identical
to the documented Phyfe sofa with Lyre arms currently at the
Metropolitan museum. sw01358 - $26,000

A Highly
Carved Mahogany Classical Sofa, probably Georgetown, D.C. and
possibly by William King, Jr., or school of, c.1820
This good-sized sofa is clearly in the masterpiece category.
Not only is the carving on the crest rail the highest we have
ever seen, but the sidearms, as well are fully carved. If this
were not enough, the winged feet are superbly executed. Beyond
being a simply fabulous sofa that is rarely encountered in the
Classical taste, we believe there is a definite association
between this and the work attributed to William King, Jr. as
shown in Southern Furniture 1680-1830, Ronald L. Hurst
and Jonathan Prown, cat. entry #42 .

Chippendale Straight Front Bureau on Tall Bracket Feet, New

A Fine
Classical Mahogany Dressing Table, North Shore, c.1825
This table is in a fine state of preservation
with acanthus carving reminiscent of the McIntyre School in
the North Shore of Massachusetts. The craftsmanship is evident
throughout and the richness of the mahogany gives this piece
an especial quality. There are many of these forms, some with
spiral legs, some reeded, some thicker, and some thinner. But,
their statuesque nature of these legs, with reeds, turning,
and the special North Shore Leaf common and often identified
with Salem, and Essex County furniture is clearly evident.

A Carved
Mahogany Dishtop candlestand with Claw and Ball feet c.1780,
Massachusetts
This is a very practical sized table
with a desirable dishtop. The mahogany is very beautifully figured.
Using highly figured woods like this in the top is explanation
for the very slight curvature of the top as these woods often
have a life of their own. For most antiquarians, this adds to
the charm. See details for the wood figure. The column is of
a baluster form with a number of ring turnings and the feet
have classic Boston "rat's paw" claw and ball design..

A Mahogany
Sheraton Workstand, Salem, c.1890
This is an extremely fine copy of a Salem sewing table executed
probably at the turn of the century. We have this piece because
of its superior craftsmanship throughout. The only thing that
seperates this from the original is time. The reeding and acanthus
carving in addition to the quality of the mahogany is of the
highest order. Indeed, a professional would have to start examining
drawers to determine oxidation levels to discern its true age.
Its quality level is far better than many period ones. It is
a faithful reproduction of the famous Salem masterpiece by the
McIntyres.
